4. Arve Henriksen, Hilmar Jensson & Skúli Sverrisson – Saumur

I love so much this record. I am a huge fan of icelandic musician Skúli Sverrisson and his work. The melodies and the ambiance have blown my mind. Give this album some time, and for sure, use your headphones🙂 Arve Henriksen’s voice is everything. The songs’ titles are based on a poem by icelandic musician Ólöf Arnalds that perhaps implicate the journey that the listener is invited to enter:

Came
Then
From beneath
Beauty
My
Open
Tender
Grace

5. Amiina – Fantômas

Mengi is my favourite icelandic label. This year Amiina composed a live score to a silent masterpiece from 1913. It’s full of pounding rythms, haunting melodies but also melancholic and ethereal. I was actually amazed by this album as a whole and I have to point the fact that I was in a shock when I listened to the album for the first time. [headphones of course]. When the magical, fragile sound world of Amiina meets the terror something unexpected and truly magical happens.

6. Xeno & Oaklander – Topiary

It’s the album I listened the most every foggy morning while I was walking by the small canals in the dutch countryside. Cold, minimal, playful but also such an emotional album. I never get bored with these guys. They don’t change their palette that much, but it works every time 🙂  The ice-cold electronic music ❤

7. Jóhann Jóhannsson – Orphée

It’s his first album since ‘Fordlandia'[2009, yeap, it’s been that long!] and I think it was rewarding. The re-tellings of the poet Orpheus was an inspiring theme to adjust the modern reality and the darkness of the world. We were supposed to be guided into the light, that’s a very common phrase among the blogs and the critics. But I deeply disagree 🙂 I think  that Light never was his intention in his personal albums. All I feel is the raw beauty of change, the dark paths along. It’s all about acknowledging and the reflections of memory. Embrace.

8. Steve Hauschildt – Strands

His latest album for Kranky finds him at his best. The sound and his textures are more mature and I loved his sharp synths. His melodies can transport you to other galaxies 🙂

It all began when I first listened to ‘Fugue State’. I can still remember how powerful, sentimental and intense it was, like a gift made of million colors 🙂 I respect this album because of its ability to transfer my mind to another state. An abyss of light.

12. Jenny Hval – Blood Bitch

The Norwegian avant-gardist Jenny Hval made an experimental pop record about vampires, blood and death. I am so glad I found the time to give this record the proper attention. ‘Secret Touch’ is such a great song.

13. Agnes Obel – Citizen Of Glass

Agnes Obel experiments with a wide range of new instruments and pushes the idea further, distorting vocals to the point where she is unrecognisable vocally. Breathtaking vocals, ethereal piano and cello compositions. Ideal album for the dark cold nights 🙂
