Clark – Peak Magnetic [Warp, 2017]

Clark is back! Peak Magnetic is the first single we get to hear and I am so truly excited 😀 Death Peak will arrive through Warp on April 7.

”I’ve had the title Death Peak since August 2016. It felt so right, I would repeat it to myself like a mantra. Death Peak Death Peak Death Peak. It starts gently, all meadows and butterflies and ends with you on top of this gnarly fearsome mountain peak, surveying a shattered landscape below”.

”I wanted the kick to sound like some massive natural event, barely controlled, a boulder bouncing down a hill with birds tweeting around it. A complete mud-ball of a pulse that anchors everything to it through sheer mass. It makes me think of outdoor spring time raving”.

Here is the tracklist, now go hear “Peak Magnetic” in the player below.

Mariam the Believer – Crust [Repeat Until Death, 2017]

One of my favorite singers, swedish Mariam Wallentin returns with a new single and a new album this year. I’ ve been waiting for her to make a second album, like forever! Her voice is an instrument. That’s a fact people.

Her first album (and in general her work with her husband Andreas Werliin as Wildbirds & Peacedrums) is an all-time favorite of me.

1. Building Instrument – Kem Som Kan å Leve [Hubro, 2016]

My major discovery and love this year was Mari Kvien Brunvoll and her various works. I respect Hubro label for the stuff they do but this was beyond my expectations. It wasn’t just experimental jazz. It was something else I couldn’t put a label or a tag or anything at all. I fell in love with her songwriting. So mystical and dreamlike and at the same time melancholic and peaceful 🙂 It’s the best thing by far as a whole that I heard this year.

2. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – EARS

According to my ”year in review” from last.fm, she is the most scrobbled artist of the year! I’ve listened to both her two last albums (I discovered her this year) so many times. This record was a challenge, a surprise and a whole new discovery for me. It’s almost like I found a new galaxy. When I listen to her music, I feel happy. I have this feeling that I am in the middle of a room, I observe the walls that surround me and all of a sudden a river is born through the space in between and bursts into an ocean of colours. At the end I feel so special 🙂 Once again I think this music is so meditative.

I can still remember how happy & joyful I was when I met her in Amsterdam this year. She makes me calm and that’s a rare thing to say these days. The new album is gorgeous, her sound is more expanded and of course I loved the synths. Music for dreaming and meditation.

7. Jóhann Jóhannsson – Orphée

It’s his first album since ‘Fordlandia'[2009, yeap, it’s been that long!] and I think it was rewarding. The re-tellings of the poet Orpheus was an inspiring theme to adjust the modern reality and the darkness of the world. We were supposed to be guided into the light, that’s a very common phrase among the blogs and the critics. But I deeply disagree 🙂 I think  that Light never was his intention in his personal albums. All I feel is the raw beauty of change, the dark paths along. It’s all about acknowledging and the reflections of memory. Embrace.

His latest album for Kranky finds him at his best. The sound and his textures are more mature and I loved his sharp synths. His melodies can transport you to other galaxies 🙂
